Recharge Your Batteries

Sometimes, even when everything seems to be going well, I start grinding. The people around me can tell because I become a grumpy old man. I can tell because successes no longer bring me joy. Golf brings me joy. Not just playing or gambling or the drink after with buddies. Those are all good, but it is the learning, talking, practice and strategy on the course that are most important.

Last Wednesday, I suggested to my wife we go somewhere for a long weekend. She has several volunteer commitments and could not get away. Thursday, I Googled golf lessons and sent out a couple of inquiries. After a couple calls and emails, I booked lessons, a flight, hotel and rental car.

Over the weekend, I had 10 hours of lessons, talked about golf philosophies, watched videos of great golf swings and on the flight home, I could feel the change in me. I was happy, full of joy, ready to get back into the routine of life.

Golf may not be the cure for grinding for you, but something will be. A sports activity, musical event, walking on the beach, stamp collecting - whatever it is that brings you joy, find it, and immerse yourself in it for a few days. My father’s joy was opera. To reuse an old expression, “recharge your batteries” because if you are not good for you how can you be good for anyone else. Living an epic life is an inside job, it is your choice!
